Lens replacement surgery, also known as refractive lens exchange (RLE), is a surgical procedure that is performed to correct presbyopia and severe hyperopia. It involves removing the natural lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The purpose of this surgery is to improve focus and reduce the need for corrective lenses. The procedure is similar to cataract surgery, in which the natural lens is removed through small incisions and the artificial lens is inserted in its place. Lens replacement surgery is an option for older adults who are no longer suitable candidates for LASIK surgery. It is important to note that while some vision insurance plans may cover monovision IOLs, which provide good middle-distance vision but may still require glasses for close-up or distance vision, multifocal or extended vision range IOLs may not be considered medically necessary and may not be covered by insurance.
