Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a procedure that is performed to remove a clouded natural lens, called a cataract, and replace it with an artificial clear lens. The following are the basic steps involved in the procedure:

• Anesthetic eye drops are administered to numb the eye.
• Small incisions are made near the edge of the cornea.
• The clouded lens is broken up and removed.
• The artificial lens is inserted.
• This surgery is typically performed to improve vision that has been affected by a cataract, which can cause haziness, blurriness, and a loss of vibrancy in colors.

Cataract surgery is a procedure that involves replacing the natural lens of the eye with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). It is typically performed when a cataract has grown large enough to significantly obstruct vision, which can occur several years or decades after a cataract diagnosis. The IOL can improve vision, although it may not restore it to 20/20. You may still have difficulty seeing objects at close or far distances, but your vision for objects at intermediate distances should improve. This surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis and does not require general anesthesia. Instead, the eye is numbed using eye drops. The surgeon will create incisions in the cornea using a laser and remove the damaged lens, replacing it with the artificial IOL. The incisions are self-sealing and will close on their own after the procedure. The surgery requires several weeks of healing time.
